The Carrie Blast Furnaces
The Carrie Blast Furnaces, a relic of “Steel City” Pittsburgh PA stand as a testament to the past. Built in 1884, this iconic structure operated for an impressive 98 years, during which time it produced over 1,000 tons of iron daily. Although the smoke has cleared, leaving behind a rusted ruin, Carrie remains the sole pre-World War II blast furnace in the Northern Hemisphere.
Towering 92 feet above the Monongahela River, Carrie Furnaces #6 and #7 are rare examples of pre-World War II iron-making technology. Constructed of 2.5″ thick steel plate and lined with refractory brick, these furnaces are the only non-operational blast furnaces in the region that still stand.
